What is normality? Who is normal?

This sounds like a simple question but not very easy to answer, I think. I was confronted with this when involved with clinical trials. We were trying to do two categories of people - normal and people with diabetes.

We were able to find lots of diabetics (unfortunately!!). However, we got really hung up with defining a normal person before starting to look for them.

This is where I started thinking about wellness, fitness and how do you know if everything is normal? Then got hung up on what is normal.

When people do medical check ups they check on a few things but does it really convey that everything is OK? We come back full circle to people being in great shape and dropping dead of a heart attack.

So what is normal?
